Balsam Hill is a globally recognized company specializing in the design and manufacture of realistic artificial Christmas trees. Company founder Mac Harman was inspired to start Balsam Hill after a family member’s allergy to real trees made it difficult to enjoy the holiday atmosphere at home. Frustrated by the lack of high-quality artificial options, Harman founded Balsam Hill to create strikingly realistic artificial trees. Today, the company is known not only for its trees but also for its exclusive Christmas decorations.

The challenge

Our challenge was to design an elegant packaging solution that would protect the delicate Christmas tree decorations and minimize space during transit. The packaging had to withstand a 12,000-kilometer journey from Poland to a new store in Hawaii. The objective was to create a solution that met all of Balsam Hill’s requirements.

The approach
Our team explored several solutions tailored to the customer’s needs. Balsam Hill decided on a two-piece packaging solution, consisting of a rigid sleeve and a drawer-like box. The key advantage of this design was that it could be folded flat for transport and quickly assembled on-site. An additional challenge for this was ensuring the graphics aligned on both elements, so that they would work together visually when assembled.
The result
Our expertise resulted in a packaging solution that is both luxurious and functional. According to the customer, the new design not only enhances the brand's premium image but also positively influences sales. The packaging also doubles as storage for the decorations. The optimized design has reduced the number of pallets in transport by 60%, significantly lowering costs while lowering transport related CO2 emissions.
