Since 2017, Smurfit Westrock’s Colombia Foundation and its colleagues have supported the “Conservamos La Vida” alliance, a public-private partnership dedicated to conserving the endangered Andean bear.

 

In a collective effort to protect the species, producers and their families in the buffer zones of Munchique National Natural Park have adopted sustainable practices. Forty-two family properties now safeguard 432 hectares of habitat, and 24,700 tree seedlings have been planted to restore the environment. Environmental education programs engage children, teenagers, and communities in understanding the bears’ importance and need for protection.

 

This program has made a lasting impact, raising awareness and strengthening local community ties. To celebrate its success, Smurfit Westrock marked International Bear Protection Day 2024, where 840 students, teachers, and families participated in educational activities promoting responsibility for preserving this vulnerable species.
