Smurfit Kappa exhibits at Fruit Logistica 2024

From 7th to 9th February, our Smurfit Kappa UK Green team united with Smurfit Kappa colleagues from nine other countries, joining forces to exhibit at Fruit Logistica 2024, one of Europe’s leading international trade fairs for the Fresh Produce industry, in Berlin.

Throughout the event, our teams of experts engaged in numerous conversations with valued customers and key stakeholders within the produce sector. These interactions were invaluable opportunities to exchange insights, foster creativity, and explore collaborative efforts aimed at driving positive change within the Fresh Produce industry through the power of packaging.

We know from consumer and market research that sustainability is a catalyst for business growth; an essential element of survival, driving brands to continuously innovate and push the boundaries of what's possible – and what’s necessary. In response to increasing demand from both consumers and businesses for more planet friendly packaging, here at Smurfit Kappa, we continue to bring new innovations which we were proud to be able to showcase at this event.

Presented by Jurgita Girzadine (Sustainability & BPP Director, Smurfit Kappa Europe), one of the key discussions was around PunNET, a revolutionary new concept, spearheaded by our European team. PunNET is a renewable mono-material, 100% recyclable punnet solution, that releases 50% less CO2 when produced than a plastic equivalent and biodegrades in less than 6 months if not recycled. Despite still being in its infancy, this project marks an exciting leap towards a more environmentally conscious future for punnets within the Fresh Produce sector. This aligns with our Better Planet Packaging initiative which seeks to create better products, better results, better relationships with our customers - and a better world for us all.

Similarly, the introduction of AgroLife to the European market presented by Jose Llopis (General Manager of Smurfit Kappa Totana), is a treatment applied to packaging formats aimed at extending the shelf life of perishable products, further emphasising our dedication to delivering fresh, eco-friendly solutions to meet market needs.

These presentations not only drew impressive crowds but also sparked engaging conversations on the future of planet friendly packaging solutions for Fresh Produce.

Fruit Logistica 2024 was a resounding success for Smurfit Kappa, marked by impactful interactions, pioneering product launches, and fruitful partnerships. As we reflect on our experiences during the event, we are motivated and invigorated to persist in expanding our horizons, cultivating a brighter, more environmentally conscious path forward for the produce industry and beyond.
