Genes against cancer run
Smurfit Westrock, had the privilege of organising the 6th year of its Charity Race, “Genes Against Cancer”, which took place in September in Burgos, Spain. All funds raised from this initiative are dedicated to a ground-breaking project in cancer genetic research, led by the medical oncology and pathological anatomy departments of the Burgos University Hospital (HUBU).
The research project is described by Enrique Lastra, Head of the Oncology Service at HUBU, as an initiative that “aims to demonstrate how treatments targeting genomic alterations, compared to conventional ones, achieve a greater reduction in tumours and allow patients to survive longer with the disease under control. Additionally, treatments enable better detection of hereditary cancer for prevention purposes.”
Lastra adds, “Initiatives such as this race are vital, not only for the financial support they provide but also for their ability to raise awareness and mobilise society around a cause that affects us all. The funds raised allow us to advance pioneering genetic research projects that not only bring us closer to more personalised and effective treatments for our patients, but also contribute to the dissemination of the importance of oncological research.”
Over its six races, Genes Against Cancer has raised more than €150,000, establishing itself as one of the most significant events in the city and a beloved tradition in Burgos. Not only are the funds raised extremely important, but the attendance has also continued to grow since it began. This year, the initiative has proudly broken the record for participation, with more than twenty sponsors and collaborators, as well as over 900 participants taking part in the race.
The route of this years race was especially captivating, winding through the heart of the historic centre of the Castilian-Leonese city, offering runners the opportunity to enjoy some of the most iconic monuments of the city, such as the Cathedral of Burgos. This scenic route transformed the race into not only a charity event, but also a cultural and tourist experience that celebrated the city.
Ángel Gómez, Regional Manager Smurfit Westrock Spain praised the community, saying, "It is a source of pride to see how the Burgos community, as well as those from outside the region, demonstrate their solidarity year after year. This race is a clear example of how we can join forces to create a positive impact. For Smurfit Westrock, collaborating with important causes like the fight against cancer is part of our responsibility as a company, and we will continue to promote such initiatives that undoubtedly contribute to the development and construction of a better society both locally and globally."
The race was a resounding success, full of hope and solidarity, where athletes, families and citizens came together to support the future of oncological research. Additionally, the race also offered the unique opportunity for those who were unable to attend to contribute by purchasing a bib, allowing everyone to contribute to this great cause, even from afar.
