Reducing pallet usage by 60% for Balsam Hill with sleek protective packaging

Balsam Hill is a globally recognised company specialising in the design and manufacture of realistic artificial Christmas trees. Company founder Mac Harman was inspired to start Balsam Hill as a result of a family member’s allergy to live trees and a desire for everyone to experience the holiday atmosphere at home. Frustrated by the lack of high-quality artificial options, Mac decided to start Balsam Hill, creating strikingly realistic artificial trees. Today, Balsam Hill is renowned not only for its artificial trees but also for its exclusive Christmas decorations.

The Challenge

We were challenged with designing an elegant packaging solution that would protect the delicate products and minimise space during transit. The packaging was required to withstand the journey from Poland to a new store in Hawaii. The objective was to create a solution which would meet all of these requirements set out by Balsam Hill. 

The Approach
Our team explored several solutions tailored to the customer’s needs. Balsam Hill decided on a two-piece packaging solution, consisting of a rigid sleeve and a drawer-like box. The key advantage to this design was its ability to be folded flat for transport and then quickly assembled on-site. An additional challenge for this was ensuring the graphics aligned on both elements, so that they would work together visually when assembled.
The Result
Our expertise resulted in a packaging solution that is both luxurious and functional. According to the customer, the new design not only enhances the brands premium image but also positively influences sales. The packaging also serves as further storage of the decorations. The optimised design has reduced the number of pallets in transport by 60%, significantly reducing costs whilst also having a positive influence on the carbon footprint.
