Pioneering Trade Packaging Supplier Smurfit Kappa Diss Makes Sizeable Investment in New Machinery

Smurfit Kappa Diss is a fully integrated and forward-thinking manufacturer of a wide range of corrugated packaging solutions exclusively for the trade sector. An integral part of their long-term planning involves staying at the forefront of cutting-edge technological advances.

Recently they were delighted to unveil exciting new warehouse and machinery upgrades to increase site capacity and capabilities at their state-of-the-art Norfolk-based factory earlier this year.

The Macarbox is on the case

This impressive £4.5m investment programme has allowed the team to expand their site capabilities by upgrading their corrugator, installing the advanced new Macarbox casemaker and increasing their warehouse space.

With its versatile functionality, the 1300 x 2800 Macarbox casemaker can produce packaging boxes that are stitched, taped and/or glued and printed in up to three colours in one pass.

Taped joints, in particular, allow more products per pallet versus glued, which in turn can save on storage space and the associated costs. The folding accuracy will also provide further performance reliability for their end-users where automatic case erectors are used.

Futureproofing and flexibility

“These innovative new developments complement our overall offering enabling us to provide the widest choice of options to our trade customers who operate in a diverse range of market sectors. The new Macarbox offers us increased flexibility in production and significant new capacity across our portfolio, especially in large/ XXL cases. Its in-line die-cut capability enables our skilled team to manufacture complex case designs and is well suited to the growing demands for work using case erecting equipment,” comments Joe Rahman from Smurfit Kappa Diss.

Long-term packaging partners and plans

Smurfit Kappa Diss is proud to be an exclusive and confidential supplier to trade customers with many long-term relationships, offering a wide range of corrugated packaging, collaborative design services and nationwide service with specific expertise in large / XXL cardboard boxes, die-cut products, and heavy-duty, including sheet board.

The recent upgrades represent pivotal growth and development for Smurfit Kappa Diss, as their trade customers have seen corrugated capacity being limited during periods of peak demand, particularly over the past two years.

Cost-effective increased quality

Customers stand to benefit substantially from this major infrastructure investment as the new Macarbox casemaker features improved board quality from the upgraded corrugator, providing precision production accuracy and superior print quality. This enables customers to offer their end-user the very best product variety and quality and have the peace of mind that they’re backed by a stable and reliable packaging provider that is committed to establishing and nurturing long-term customer relationships.

Smurfit Kappa Diss (or “Bux” to many of its long-standing and valued customers) has an outstanding reputation for quality and service. This investment ensures they continue to offer this well into the future through investing in the end-to-end operations of their business – from corrugator to casemaker and warehousing.

The Norfolk-based site of the Smurfit Kappa Group offers sheet plants and packaging distributors a full and confidential end-to-end service from the initial technical design stage to sample approval, a rapid enquiry response right the way through to printing and manufacturing a reliable, cost-effective, and sustainable solution.

Full steam ahead

With the new machine already in full operation, this extra capacity forms part of the Smurfit Kappa Diss team’s plan to be a leading corrugated packaging partner to the trade (both sheet plants and packaging distributors).

“We’re absolutely thrilled to offer our customers these superb new features and look forward to exploring the rich and rewarding future of packaging together in the future,” says Steve Lambert, Sales Director.
