Smurfit Westrock DACH team transforms community spaces
Every year, our Corrugated DACH (Germany, Austria and Switzerland) team coordinates a social event where colleagues come together to volunteer their time and energy to improve a local community resource or facility while also enjoying the opportunity to meet and socialize.
This year, colleagues poured their energy into transforming the outdoor area of the Socio-Cultural Center “Mittendrin” in Delitzsch, by installing a new interactive playground for the kindergarten children and greatly improving the outdoor space.
Colleagues in the Western Region of Smurfit Westrock DACH also showed great generosity of spirit when they supported a local kindergarten, which was seeking permission to accept children with additional needs into their facility. However they lacked the required ‘snoezelen’ or multi-sensory room in order to gain this permission.
Not only did our Smurfit Westrock volunteers pull up their sleeves and create a sensory room, but they also enhanced the outdoor areas by installing a chicken coop, laying down pathways, tidying the fruit and vegetable patches and constructing a trailer and bench for the children and staff to enjoy.
The volunteering continued at a primary school in Malchow, where colleagues from our corrugated board plant in Waren showed enthusiasm and expertise as they built a care space for pupils with mental and physical impairments and disabilities, so they could have a place of retreat.
All of these initiatives provide valuable support to their communities and improve the facilities and opportunities for children and families. All were proudly supported by Smurfit Westrock’s Foundation. They also provide colleagues with an opportunity to socialize and build relationships, both among themselves and with people and organizations in their communities.
